It’s hard not to love the Wonder Villains. Almost like cartoon characters come to life, their strawberry bubble-gum sound inflates to comical proportions before bursting and sticking in your head like any good pop song should. TV is probably the most rounded Wonder Villains record to date, with the title track coming across like a celebration of how far they’ve come to date, thanks to their eighties-infused keyboard hooks and a chorus that you’ll be guaranteed to sing along with by the time the song ends.
Each song progressively peels off a layer of the Wonder Villains and whilst Chiller Whale and Rapid are perfectly suitable B-Side material, they don’t quite live up to the fun, tongue-in-cheek that made previous tracks such as Zola or Ferrari such addictive songs to listen to. However, the band have one last trick up their sleeve with the final track, Explode which rounds off the EP with a very different side of the Wonder Villains than what we’re used to. Eimear Coyle’s soft vocals are supported only by the gentle acoustics of Ryan McGroarty’s guitar, crafting a lullaby of a tune that just goes to show that even these villains can show their softer side.
