Culture Night Belfast has easily become a staple in everyone’s calendar as the one night people should venture out and explore the streets of Belfast. You never quite know what is round the next corner and based on last year it could be jugglers, street artists, live music, comedy or even wrestling. But while we love all of the other cultural happenings, we could hardly call ourselves a local music website if we didn’t focus on the music. Luckily for you I’ve picked out 10 events that you don’t want to miss.
101 Sessions – Redeemer Central, 101 Donegal Street – 7pm till 10pm
For those looking for music on the softer side of the spectrum, you’d be wise to check out the Library Sessions. Set in the beautiful setting of Redeemer Central, the evening will feature Village Fires, The Emerald Armada, Ricky McQuillan, Hannah McPhillimy and Sons of Caliber.

The streets around music store Dawsons will be closed off to allow them to host a special block party. Band in a Jukebox – The Wickerman, High Street – 7pm till 8pm
Arts and craft shop The Wickerman will be hosting a special “Band in a Jukebox” and they’ve chosen the perfect group to fill it. R51 have truly captivated us here at Chordblossom and their reach seems to be spreading. They’ll be locked in the jukebox and performing a stripped back set, not to be missed.
Little Matador – The Assembly Rooms, Waring Street – 6.30pm
There is little doubt that this will be one of the best attended music events with Nathan Connolly (of Snow Patrol fame) fronting a rare intimate Belfast show as front man for the scuzzy rock notion that is his new band Little Matador. Support slots have included Queens of the Stone Age and Nine Inch Nails so you know they’re going to sound impressive.

Guinness Amplify – Pavilion Bar, Ormeau Road – 10pm till 1am
Guinness Amplify is a new initiative putting on great live music in a host of venues around Ireland. On Culture Night this is our pick of their shows with three up and coming bands in, Hot Cops, Freak’s and Escobar all playing under one roof.
UNKNWN – St Anne’s Cathedral, Donegal Street – 10pm till 11pm
One of the most stunning buildings in Belfast will host the Champion Sound duo of Gemma Dunleavy and Chris Hanna aka UNKNWN. As a special treat they’ll be playing live with a cello accompaniment, this event will be talked about for years to come.
Oh Yeah Presents – Oh Yeah Music Centre, Gordon Street – 7pm till 1am
The Oh Yeah Music Centre has helped transform the lives of quite a few local musicians and they’re also known for putting on a decent gig or two. It’s no surprise then that they’re roped in Go Wolf, Cruising and Rhinos to celebrate CNB in style.

In store Sessions – Head Records, Castlecourt – 12 till 6pm
Independent record store Head will be showing off their commitment to the NI music scene with a selection of live bands and DJs throughout the day before the big events start in the evening. Plus take a look at their local music section in store and support some of your favourite bands by purchasing their music!
Sal Hanvey – The John Hewitt, 51 Donegal Street – 5pm till 6pm
Sal Hanvey is taking the brave step and using CNB to launch her debut album, Nostalgia Queen. She’ll be taking up residence in the cosy surroundings of the John Hewitt so if spell binding folk is your thing, we’ll know where to find you.
This is just a tiny snap shot of all the goodness that Culture Night Belfast has to offer. There are stacks of other events taking place throughout the city and I would suggest you take a read at the programme on the Culture Night Belfast 2014 site.
