Our fortnightly gig guide picks out a handful of must see gigs taking place across Northern Ireland.
The final month of summer freedom is upon us, and we are in for a month of new releases and exceptional live music, feel the summer haze wear off sound tracked to our favourite local acts.
White Lighter – Sandinos – Thursday 3rd August 2023
Derry alt-rock 3-piece White Lighter launch fresh single ‘Skewed’, upon the release of 2022 self-titled debut EP, with a culmination of influences from pixies to the strokes. Any 90s alternative-rock/ indie music fanatics, make sure not to miss out on this.
Chordblossom x Snow Water – Maritime Mile – Sunday 6th August 2023
Returning for another year, Chordblossom have provided a promising lineup varying from dock to dock, a day of music by the sea. First up, Lucy Bell takes the stage at SoundYard, this folk-pop solo act is one to look out for, striving for success. Next, Cathal Francis at Abercorn Marina, this indie-folk singer songwriter reminiscent of Elliott Smith and Adrienne Lenker combines a mellow acoustic sound with melodic whispery vocals.
Later on, Róise, an 18 year old singer-songwriter displays her talent prior to the final artist back at SoundYard, the renowned Sasha Samara. This mellifluent pop star is making her name through Northern Ireland, her debut EP ‘why am i still here, i never learn’ just released, with lyrics of honesty and identity alongside catchy dance-worthy beats and melodies, bubbly yet aware.
Lucy Bell – Union Bar – Friday 11th August 2023
Lucy Bell launches her debut EP ‘Emotion Pending’, the singer-songwriter achieving great success prior, such as plays on Cool FM and Radio Ulster. Her recent singles project a feminine indie pop energy, reminiscent of Hayley Williams and Japanese House.
Susi Pagel – Union Bar – Saturday 12th August 2023
Sparkling ‘pop princess’ Susi Pagel is set to perform her debut headline show, and this is not one to miss out on. Following her 2022 distinctive single ‘Pick me’, a result of the renowned ‘Scratch my Progress’ programme, she has had a year of non-stop live music, commanding the stage with her Melanie Martinez-esque powering yet unique presence, unlike any other.
Coaster – Playhouse Portrush – Saturday 12th August 2023
As we mourn the beloved ‘Atlantic Bar’, the North Coast alternative music culture continues to thrive. ‘Coaster’, a summer gathering taking place in Portrush, celebrates skaters to rockers as local favourites such as ‘Wohn’ and ‘Tramp’ take the stage, not to mention iconic headliners ‘Axis of’, performing 2013 boisterous debut album ‘Finding St. Kilda’ in full, for one night only, a nostalgia fest.
