Following the release of his debut EP, Listen, back in March 2015, new material from Ryan McMullan has been non-existent. Not to say that the Portaferry native has been resting on his laurels, rather he has been broadening his horizons as the special guest on Foy Vance’s ongoing European tour.
The subtle influence of Bangor’s acclaimed songwriter is present on this new release, the rather anthemic, ‘A Winter’s Coat‘. The single is as pure a love song as you will find that features the slightest slight Americana essence that helps set McMullan apart from other songwriters on our isle.
Going hand in hand with McMullan’s songwriting is his strong voice, with last year’s ‘Holding Me Down’ showcasing its full power. ‘A Winter’s Coat’ is a much more reflective moment in the songwriter’s repertoire but McMullan’s vocals are no less rousing.
‘A Winter’s Coat’ sets a very high bar for anything Ryan McMullan releases in the future and leaves us with no doubt that he really has the talent to go all the way.
“A Winter’s Coat really was a song I had written for myself. I never thought it would be considered to be a single but every time I played it live I always had people asking me where they could find it. So I figured I’d record and release it.
The foundation of the song was written about a moment. That realisation of love and then written down honestly. I felt no need to fluff up the lyrics. I had something to say and I wrote it down as honestly as I could.
It’s a true testament to a moment in my life and one I’m happy to relive every time I sing it”.
